It wasn't Christmas, but for Amazon Prime members, it was darn close: Amazon Prime Day, one of the biggest shopping days of the year, came and went earlier this week. Unfortunately, there weren't many Prime Day-specific deals to be had for augmented reality fans, but that doesn't mean AR-loving Amazon Prime members were completely left out.
Because we know many of you out there have been holding onto your credit cards, waiting for just the right moment to pick up some new augmented reality gear, or perhaps an AR gift for a friend, we've compiled a list Amazon Prime AR treats to help you out.
Lenovo Mirage AR/Star Wars: Jedi Challenges
You know and love the Star Wars franchise, but maybe you missed the other 100 times we tried to tell you how cool Holochess is on the Lenovo Mirage AR headset. Or maybe you knew, but were waiting for a sweet, sweet discount. Well, you're in luck.
The Lenovo Mirage AR headset is available via Amazon Prime, and while it's usually $199, you can get it now for $192 or less after you trade-in other gaming gear, even if you purchased that gear somewhere other than on Amazon.
Leap Motion
For AR developers, another Prime treat is the Leap Motion Universal VR Developer Bundle, which comes with one Leap Motion Controller and a Universal VR Developer Mount.
The item is listed as compatible with the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive, but many AR developers have been experimenting with Leap Motion as an interface solution in AR. Amazon is offering it for up to $70 off (usually priced at $89.99), allowing you to pay just $19.99 if you're approved for the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa card.
AR Learning Cards
If you've been looking for an easy way to introduce your kids to AR, while giving them a robust learning tool, the Fancy Zoo animal flashcards might be a great way to get them started. Made for children 3-years-old and up, the flashcards and app present your child with 3D interaction representations of 12 marine animals, 24 land animals, 9 insects, 13 flying animals and 10 dinosaurs.
A great example of marker-based AR, the set is perfect for parents looking to directly teach their children using technology, rather than simply set them off somewhere alone with an iPad. Usually sold for $29.99, Amazon Prime brings it to you for just $13.98.
Apple iPad
If you read Next Reality regularly, you already know iOS and ARKit, and what they bring to AR. But if you're too busy on your iPhone sending texts, making calls, and organizing your day to also use it for AR, perhaps an iPad is the thing that will get you deep into AR.
Amazon Prime is offering the 9.7-inch iPad (6th generation) for $377.40 (normal price $447.40) upon approval for the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa card.
Merge Goggles
The Merge VR/AR Goggles are basically the most rudimentary approach you can take toward AR, but if you're on a strict budget, and won't be able to afford a HoloLens or Meta 2 headset anytime soon, this is far better than nothing. Amazon Prime is offering 20% off its list price of $29.99 when you apply a coupon.
HoloKit
If you're more on the developer side of AR, but similarly strapped for cash, the HoloKit device may be more up your alley.
This is basically the Google Cardboard of AR, but this product is targeting developers looking to developer mobile AR apps. Priced at $36.99, Amazon is offering the device for $0.00 (yep, free!) upon approval for the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa card.
Anker Battery Charger
For those already knee-deep in mobile AR, well acquainted with just how quickly it can drain your smartphone's battery, this could be your savior. The Anker PowerCore 26800 Portable Charger is listed for $61.99, but for Prime members, you can actually snag this reliable portable charger for free if approved for the Prime Rewards Visa card.
Merge Cube
This is another item we've previously covered on Next Reality that delivers a bit of AR magic on the cheap. The Merge Cube can be used with the previously mentioned Merge Goggles, or via your smartphone with the associated app.
When you hold the cube in front of your smartphone, watch as it transforms itself into various games and interactive treats. Normally priced at $14.97, Amazon Prime offers it for just $7.98.
AR Shirt
This has been around for a while, but it's still one of our favorite gimmicky parts of the AR universe that can quickly show a newbie the power of AR tech. The Curiscope Virtuali-Tee is a t-shirt that, when detected by the associated iOS or Android app, turns into an educational tool that reveals the secrets of the human anatomy. Sold for $29.95, Amazon Prime is offering the shirt for 15% off when you apply a coupon.
Father.IO Inceptor
Yet another device Next Reality covered recently, the Father.IO Inceptor is the augmented reality accessory that turns your smartphone into an interactive toy. In short, this device, when paired with smartphones, allows you and your friends to play AR laser tag. Offered for $39.99, you can get it for $32 or less when you present a trade-in via Amazon Prime.
